Annual Inflation in the OECD Area Surges to 3.3% in November 2007

Consumer prices in the OECD area rose by 3.3% in the year to November 2007 compared with 2.8% in the year to October 2007. On a monthly basis, the price level rose by 0.5% in November after 0.3%
between September and October 2007.


Energy and food items account for most of the increase in inflation. Consumer prices for energy increased by 13.3% year-on-year in November, compared with a rise of 8.5% in October, while for food they were up by 4.6% year-on-year in November, compared with 4.1% in October. Excluding food and energy, consumer prices rose by 2.0% in the year to November compared with 1.9% in October.

In the euro area, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) was up by 3.1% in the year to November, compared with 2.6% in the year to October 2007. Month-on-month, the HICP in the euro area rose by 0.5% in November, unchanged from October. Excluding food and energy, the year-on-year rise in the HICP in the euro area amounted to 1.9% in November, unchanged from October.

In the United States, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 4.3% over the twelve months to November, compared with 3.5% in the year to October 2007.

In Japan, consumer prices increased by 0.6% in November a year earlier, compared with 0.3% in October.

Over the twelve months to November, consumer prices rose by 3.1% in Germany, 2.5% in Canada, 2.4% in Italy and in France and 2.1% in the United Kingdom.
