The latest composite leading indicators (CLIs) suggest that some moderation in economic expansion lies ahead in the OECD area. July 2007 data show weakening performance in the CLI’s six month rate of change in all the major seven economies. The latest data for major OECD non-member economies point to moderating expansion in China and Brazil, but an improved outlook for India and Russia.

Economic prospects in the US, Europe and Japan have become less buoyant and more uncertain, said OECD chief economist Jean-Philippe Cotis. US growth is likely to be weighed by a weaker housing sector while activity in the Euro area and Japan should pick up after the second quarter slowdown. Central banks should avoid bailing out excessive financial risk-taking, he added.

Worldwide sales of semiconductors increased in July, growing to $20.6 billion, an increase of 2.2 percent over July 2006 and an increase of 3.2 percent from June of this year, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported. In July 2006 global microchip sales were $20.1 billion, and in June 2007 total sales amounted to $20 billion. Growth was mainly attributable to increases in sales of microprocessors, MOS logic devices, and NAND flash memory products.

Fitch Ratings says the European insurance industry's risk from various US sub-prime mortgage exposures is minimal based on the agency's analysis of data surveys and various public and non-public disclosures. Consequently, Fitch does not expect to take negative rating actions on any European insurers due to US sub-prime-related credit issues for the remainder of 2007.
