Worldwide PC shipments grew by 10.9% in the first quarter of 2007 (1Q07), according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. Year-on-year growth improved from the fourth quarter in all regions with Europe and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) showing the biggest improvements versus forecasts. Japan recovered from a double-digit decline in the fourth quarter, but was the only region with declining volume as the United States moved back into growth mode. Portable PC adoption remained the primary driver with a strong Consumer component.

The worldwide mobile phone market demonstrated continued growth during the first quarter of 2007. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 256.4 million units, a year-on-year increase of 10.0% for the first quarter of 2007. However, the shipments were 13.8% lower than the record shipments in the previous quarter; the decline was expected owing to the seasonality of the market.

Global Insight announced the findings of its inaugural report produced by Global Insight's new Telecoms Intermodal Forecasting Service. The report concluded that China and India will remain the world's growth engine for wireless services, accounting for 60% of the 1.2 billion predicted new mobile subscribers over the next five years.

Fitch Ratings says in a quarterly report that at the end of Q107, 16.3% of global bank ratings were assigned Positive Outlooks, the highest level recorded since the report began. This increase was driven by emerging markets where a number of banks benefited from changes to their sovereign Outlooks.

Merchandise trade exports in the Group of Seven countries rose by a slight, seasonally-adjusted 1.0% in the fourth quarter of 2006 compared with the previous quarter. Import volume growth continued to shrink, falling 0.1%. On a year-on-year basis, G7 trade volumes continued to grow, but at lower rates, with exports 5.9% higher and imports up 3.6%.
