The world's airlines have scheduled 6% fewer flights for April 2009 compared with the same month last year, with a 3% drop in seat capacity, according to the latest statistics from OAG , the world's leading aviation data business and part of UBM Aviation. This is the ninth successive month of declines, and represents a reduction of more than 136,000 flights and 9 million seats year on year. The total number of flights scheduled to operate worldwide this month is 2.34 million, offering 287.3 million seats to travelers around the globe.

EU Member States have adopted a negotiating mandate for a new economic and free trade agreement between the EU and Canada. This agreement would go beyond current WTO commitments and reinforce the already strong bilateral trade and investment relationship. In 2008, trade in goods and services between the EU and Canada exceeded EUR 70 billion and the total stock of investment stood at over EUR 260 billion. Negotiations, which will be led by the European Commission, are expected to be launched at the EU-Canada Summit on 6 May in Prague.

The World Bank said it was mobilizing up to $3.1 billion this year in health financing to help poor countries battle threats to their social services during the global economic crisis. This effectively triples Bank support from $1.0 billion last year and will be used to strengthen health systems in poor countries, boost their performance in preventing and treating communicable diseases, and improving child and maternal health, hygiene and sanitation.

After enjoying a decade of strong growth and poverty reduction, the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ECA) are now seeing the global economic and financial crisis push almost 35 million people back into poverty and vulnerability, or about one-third of the people that had escaped from it over the last ten years, the World Bank said today at its regular regional economic briefing at the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings.

The World Bank will increase infrastructure investments to $45 billion over the next three years to provide the foundation for rapid recovery from the global economic crisis, World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick announced at the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings. In the wake of last year’s food crisis, the Bank Group is also boosting support for agriculture from $4 billion in 2008 to $12 billion over the next two years to help ensure vital food security.
