In European online retailing, risks of non-payment are lower for women than for men. This is indicated by a lower chargeback ratio, which describes the share of credit card transactions which had to be charged back after the cardholder's rejection. At roughly 0.10%, female consumers' non-payment ratio for online purchases paid for by credit card is only half that of male customers. One year before the opposite was true.

Global mergers and acquisition (M&A) upstream transaction value plunged to $104 billion in 2008 from an annual average of nearly $160 billion in 2005-2007, according to the 2009 Global Upstream M&A Review prepared by IHS Herold Inc., an IHS company, and Harrison Lovegrove & Co., Ltd., a Standard Chartered group company.

The worldwide mobile phone market felt the full effects of the economic crisis in the fourth quarter of 2008 as shipments fell 11.6% year over year, marking the first time the holiday quarter has not recorded double digit growth in seven years. This closed out a year that was dismal at best, yet overall 2008 managed to grow 4.3% over 2007. This has set the stage for what IDC predicts to be a very rough 2009, with the most recent market forecast anticipating growth of -8.3% for the year.

The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey of global hiring trends reveals that employers worldwide say they will continue to cut back on hiring in the second quarter of 2009 compared to one year ago, with U.S. employers reporting the gloomiest outlook since the 1982 recession.
